Indie dance night at Groucho Club – Soho London The Groucho Club remains a bastion and refuge for arts, literature and media folk in the bohemian heart of London’s West End. This was such a great night in one of Soho’s most cosmopolitan clubs. In the crowd was Andrew Ridgley from Wham and Rusty Egan from the Visage. Also present was Chris Sullivan of the Wag club who rather kindly said its great to hear a good DJ as most nowadays are s**t……
The Groucho was dreamed up by a group of 15 publishers, writers and agents who were sick of having nowhere to meet in London. Even before the doors opened, in May 1985, membership was the holy grail of the London scene. The artist Peter Blake, a Soho habitué, says The Groucho may not have been looking for bohemian artists but it got them anyway: ‘The Groucho brought sophistication to rather a seedy scene.’ Film producer Bradley Adams remembers coming in for a drink with Robbie Coltrane and Francis Bacon, Jeffrey Bernard and Dan Farson were sitting at the bar.
